MAPLE WEEKENDS
The Sweetest Rite of Spring
We're getting ready for Tap Time 2013. The main New York Maple Weekend event will take place at The Wild Center March 16th and 17th with two full days dedicated to making and guzzling the sweet stuff. You'll be able to take part in turning the sweet sap of trees into one of the best sugars anywhere. Tapping used to be something that brought people together in our part of the world. Bring your friends and family and you can see how it still does.
There are two Tapper breakfasts in advance of the Maple Weekend, on February 24th and March 16th, where you can come to a free pancake breakfast and learn about the Wild Center's sugar operation. These events are designed to help area forest-owners see how they can start tapping their own trees.
We will have a full sugaring operation on site as soon as the sap starts running, turning the tapped sap into syrup. We'll have tapping tours where you can test your drill skills, and your taste buds, sampling syrup (you'll be amazed at the differences you can taste), maple sugar, spun maple delight (an amazing twist on cotton candy) and the sweet sap itself that hints at what's to come.
If you want to participate in the whole maple story, and be part of our maple parties, we will have special events on both days at New York Maple Weekend. You'll go home with a brand new view of the amazing trees that feed us and color our mountains. Our friends at the Adirondack Museum will be on hand to show how syrup making shaped springtimes past.
The maple work at The Wild Center is a community project. Together with many partners, including the trees, we hope to play our part in building an opportunity each year for people to convene, and create a sweet source of income for people in the process. The tapping season is a chance to bring people and nature together in an interesting way, and to show people who are interested how they can tap an income stream from the forests that help define the special character of our communities.
We hope you will join all of our friends and partners, including our partners at the Paul Smith's VIC, in these good times. Find out more about the Northern New York Maple Project at www.northernnewyorkmaple.com.
