Public Facing Volunteering
As a public-facing volunteer, you'll make an impact by interacting with visitors on the museum floor and outdoors.
Outdoor Program volunteers spend their shifts outside on our campus and trails. Tasks vary and could include leading an insect catching activity, facilitating activities in the pines play area, or leading a naturalist walk on our trails.

Planet Adirondack (PADK) volunteers help engage visitors in stories, show data sets and connect content to the Adirondacks. Volunteers will act as informal exhibit guides as well as have the opportunity to create their own linked science stories or use the pre-established ones.

Volunteers will help in the store with general stocking, talking to visitors, pricing merchandise, receiving, light cleaning, answering visitor questions, and bagging.

Retail: Café Store & Department
Tinkering Studio Volunteers help engage visitors in building, testing and playing while exploring concepts of climate solutions. Activities include wind turbines, animal homes, and upcycled crafts. Duties include cleaning, restocking supplies, and providing demonstrations/instructions for visitors.

Volunteers interact with the public aided by a specific thematic trunk outside at the Wild Walk or inside at the exhibits. Themes include: From the Forest, Otter Facts, birding, and more...

Volunteers will table the Information Desk at the heart of the center to welcome visitors, answer questions, provide program information, and guidance on planning their visit.

Behind the Scenes Volunteering
As a behind-the-scenes volunteer, you'll make an impact by helping with organization and logistics across departments.
Volunteers assist with diet preparation including handling raw meat, cleaning and disinfecting animal habitats, behavioral observations under direction of animal care staff, and other duties related to animal care.

Volunteers will help with cleaning throughout the Center. This could include dusting, sweeping, sanitizing exhibits and surfaces, picking up trash on trails, and sorting returnable bottles.

Volunteers will enter data into spreadsheets and web pages concerning climate data.

Volunteers will assist the facilities department with watering gardens, sweeping outdoor sidewalks, and removing invasive species.

Volunteers will build program equipment, maintain furniture, and construct on-site projects.

The Wild Center’s Community Maple Project runs during March and April of each year. Volunteers help out around the Sugar Shack on boil days with stoking the fire, chopping firewood, and unloading sap. Other tasks include bottling syrup and cleaning buckets at the end of the season.

Volunteers working in the office help us in a variety of ways. Answer the phones to provide visitors with information about programming, hours, and more. Assist with mailings, data entry, and other important office tasks.

Development & Membership Department
Volunteers can help with set-up in the fall or take-down in the spring. Fall duties include stringing lights in Forest Music, on the Stickwork sculpture, and on Wild Walk. Spring duties include taking lights off of trees and rolling them up neatly for storage.
