Love Snow? Want to make a real impact on climate and snow research? Become a Snow Scientist this winter by joining the X-Snow team! This winter, residents of the Adirondacks have the unique opportunity to help scientists study snow. The Adirondacks are known for their beautiful snowy landscapes and are a perfect research location to increase our understanding of snow in the Northeast. X-Snow is a NASA-funded citizen science initiative that invites participants of all ages to help record snow conditions in the Adirondacks, Catskills, Schoharie, and surrounding areas. X-Snow protocols have tiers to enable participation by all. How much snow data you collect is up to you! The protocols range from collecting simple snow measurements, such as snow depth using a ruler in your backyard, to more detailed snow analysis, looking at snowflakes and measuring the amount of water contained in snow. By submitting observations through X-Snow's online form, citizen scientists contribute to real-world data that helps to validate satellite data and improve our understanding of snow behavior in the Northeast, which is understudied. This project makes meaningful contributions to understanding how snow will evolve in response to climate change and improves models to predict snow cover in areas such as the Adirondacks. The X-Snow team is partnering with The Wild Center to help bring together eager snow enthusiasts from the Adirondacks and have fun in the snow this winter! Please join us for an X-Snow training at The Wild Center on Saturday, January 10th, from 1:00-4:00 pm! Get a chance to meet the X-Snow team and understand the goals for the project, learn how to collect snow data, and meet other snow lovers.
