SUMMARY:Science Speaker Series: Steve Langdon
DESCRIPTION:\n\nAdirondack Peatlands: A Critical Natural Solution to Climat
 e Change.\n\nwith Steve Langdon\, Director of Shingle Shanty Preserve\n\nB
oreal peatlands of the Adirondacks are at the southern limit of this carbo
n-rich ecosystem’s global distribution. Boreal Peatlands are the nexus o
f climate\, biodiversity and carbon sequestration\, accounting for approxi
mately one third of terrestrial global carbon. Studying these ecosystems i
n the Adirondacks provides tools that protect peatland carbon and biodiver
sity\, ultimately contributing to natural solutions to climate change. Thr
ough over a decade of work at Shingle Shanty Preserve and Research Station
and Borealis Consulting\, Ecologist Stephen Langdon has been conducting l
ong-term monitoring of peatland microclimates and biodiversity in the Adir
ondacks. He will share broad perspectives on peatland conservation and dis
cuss current research efforts in the region.\n\nCost: Free for members or
with paid admission\nAbout the speaker:\nStephen Langdon has 25 years of e
xperience in the Adirondacks working on conservation from shovel-in-hand t
rail maintenance to biodiversity research with government and private orga
nizations. He has a Masters degree in Ecology from the State University of
New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry\, as well as a B.S
in Ecology and a B.A. in Philosophy from SUNY Plattsburgh\, where he is a
n adjunct instructor in the Center for Earth and Environmental Science. St
eve is involved in a number of research efforts surrounding impacts of hum
an-caused global environmental change on biodiversity within the boreal-te
mperate ecotone with a particular focus on peatlands. When he is not at Sh
ingle Shanty he lives with his wife and two young sons in Saranac Lake.\n\

SUMMARY:Learn 10 Trees: Identifying Adirondack Trees with Botanist Dan Spad
 a
DESCRIPTION:\n\n*Registration required\n\n\n\n\nNew York Flora Association
is offering this program in partnership with the Wild Center.  Join bota
nist Dan Spada for this excursion to identify 10 native tree species in th
e field. Instruction will be provided on the use of keys and guides to be
able to identify trees and other plants. This program includes a short lab
inside to introduce the program and some terminology. Most of our time wi
ll be spent outside on our trails and in the woods. This is a great opport
unity to learn plant identification in the field and to get familiar with
the keys and other tools used to identify trees. Participants will also cr
eate their own identification keys using specimens or field sketches.\n\nS
pace is limited to 15 participants so please register soon.\n\nCost:  Fre
e for members or with paid admission. Pre-registration required.\n\n

SUMMARY:Science Speaker Series: Jen Grauer
DESCRIPTION:Moose Health and Survival in New York with Jen Grauer\, Phd Stu
dent at Cornell University working with the Cornell Wildlife Health Lab\n\
nFree for members or with paid admission\n\nSince recolonizing the state i
n the 1980's\, moose have increased in number until a recent population st
agnation. Despite high adult survival and reproduction\, adequate quantiti
es and quality of suitable habitat\, and tolerable climate\, moose remain
at low densities compared to neighboring states. Populations within the no
rtheast have fluctuated because of disease\, and we have initiated a study
on moose health and juvenile survival in New York to assess the local imp
act of parasites. This talk will cover aims of the project\, methods for s
tudying moose\, and lessons learned thus far.\n\n
